Did you realize that the NBA regular season is right around the corner? Well, if you are aware of what today's date is, and when the NBA season begins, I assume the answer is yes. However, before we get to the good, fun games to count, first we must get through the preseason. The Pistons' preseason begins tonight, with a game against Maccabi Haifa from Israel.
The fact that Detroit is opening up against a European team should tell you all you need to know about preseason hoops. The games don't count, and, unlike the NFL, there aren't a lot of roster decisions to be made. Really, it is just about guys not getting hurt, and maybe Andre Drummond makes some free throws and that would be nice to see.
To be fair, I am marginally interesting in what happens with Detroit's preseason. How does their huge front court look? Can Josh Smith, Greg Monroe, and Drummond work together? There is also the introduction of Brandon Jennings as a Piston. I am also curious as to who is going to be the starting shooting guard for this team. The concern is that it will be Rodney Stuckey, which would not be a good idea.
Fortunately, in this first preseason game, the starter is going to be Chauncey Billups. Maybe this is just a cool thing for the team to do because Billups is back as a Piston at the Palace. However, I think he could end up being the starter. He can still shoot and handle the ball a bit. I don't think he can play a ton of minutes, but when he is out, hopefully Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is the primary backup.
So yeah, get ready for some Drummond magic and Tony Mitchell doing fancy dunks. That's what preseason is all about. Eventually, the real games will start, and life will be beautiful again.
