Michigan United States Attorney Barbara L. McQuade announced today the arrest and indictments of 33 Latin Counts street gang members. The Latin Counts gang operates in southwest Detroit and the down-river communities of Lincoln Park and Ecorse. The arrest were made by the Detroit Police Department and the FBI Violent Crime Task Force under the Detroit One Initiative and the partnering with investigators from various state and federal law enforcements, that allowed the separate investigation of various gang members and their activities and than merging them into one case. The indictments alleges racketeering, assaults, murder, selling illegal narcotics, stolen firearms, breaking and entering homes and businesses and robbery.
According to the racketeering indictment, it is alleged that; Victor Vasquez, 23, of Detroit, used and carried a firearm to assist in a crime of violence causing death, assault with bodily injury in aid of racketeering and assault with a dangerous weapon in aid of racketeering. Avery Denardis, 20, of Dearborn, Jeffrey Lunsford, 34, of Ecorse, Kyle Voltz, 24, of Lincoln Park, and Jacob Hixson, 20, of Detroit, were charged with assault with bodily injury in aid of racketeering. The indictment alleges that the Latin Counts gang uses violence to stake out its “turf” and intimidate both rival gang members and the citizens of southwest Detroit.
According to the felon in possession indictment, it is alleged that, Tim Galvan, 32, of Detroit, and Luke Reardon, 23, of Detroit, were being a felon in possession of a firearm. In addition, 26 other defendants were recently charged in an indictment with heroin and cocaine distribution and related firearms offenses. These defendants also operated in southwest Detroit.
The indictment alleges that defendant Victor Vasquez, as a Latin Counts gang member, aided and abetted in the use of a firearm during a crime of violence, causing the death of Mustafa Al-Yasiry at the Big Apple Market in southwest Detroit on April 18, 2014 and that several Latin Counts assaulted Al-Yasiry, and one member shot and killed him.
