A 49-year-old man turned himself into the Detroit police Wednesday morning for running down a west side child, 8, and then leaving the scene. The DPD says the man has made a full confession and is being held pending charges.

Shena Wilhite told WDIV-4 that she and her child Darrin had just arrived home Tuesday evening when the youngster asked permission to ride his bike.

Darrin Wilhite was near West Chicago and Abington Avenue, about two blocks from his home, when he was struck by a man driving a red SUV. The incident was witnessed by several of Darrin’s friends, who ran to tell his mother.

Meanwhile, Darrin and his bicycle had gotten entangled with the vehicle and were dragged for several blocks. Even after the youngster and his bike fell away, the driver declined to stop.

Darrin Wilhite was pronounced dead at Sinai-Grace Hospital.

The hit-and-run driver turned himself in at about 9:30 a.m. this morning. It is now up to the prosecutor what charges to bring against him.
