Detroit Lions select Eric Ebron with 10th pick

For starters, apparently Barry Sanders doing the picking for the Detroit Lions is a thing now. Once again, Sanders gave the selection for the Lions in the 2014 NFL Draft. The picks before the Lions drafted got pretty interesting, and Detroit made their pick really fast. Then, they took Eric Ebron, the tight end out of North Carolina.

Well...OK. I'm lukewarm on this. I can't get too irked about it, but I'm not terribly happy. Ebron was considered one of the better prospects in this draft, and definitely the top tight end. He's big and athletic and fast and what have you. The Lions certainly need some receiving help. Still, to use the 10th overall pick on a tight end? Unless you are getting the next Vernon Davis, the last time a tight end went this high, it isn't worth it.

Darqueze Dennard was available. So was Taylor Lewan and Aaron Donald. There were better options. Ebron is very much a modern tight end. He doesn't really block. He'll mostly be used like a Jimmy Graham, which is fine. Blocking is the one thing Brandon Pettigrew does well. However, the Lions could have waited until the second round to get a similar player, like a Jace Amaro or an Austin Sefarian-Jenkins.

Detroit had offensive weapons before selecting Ebron. One more is fine, but the defense still has issues. I'm all for taking the best player available, but Ebron was not the best player available. The Lions better have the best offense in the NFL next season. That's about the only way this pick might be justified.

Also, apparently Ebron got engaged earlier today atop the Empire State Building. Good for him. That's some real Mindy Project type stuff.
