Detroit coach shoots two teens, killing one

A Detroit basketball coach has shot and killed a 16-year-old on Friday evening.

The 70-year-old coach said he was exiting Martin Luther King, Jr. Senior High School with two female basketball players when two young men approached them. The men allegedly “pulled out a gun and grabbed the coach.”

In order to protect himself, the coach said he retrieved his own weapon and shot the young men, according to the Huffington Post.

One teen, Michael Scott, 16, died and the other is in serious condition.

“The Detroit Police Department said the coach is a concealed pistol license holder. WDIV reports the coach, who they identify as Ernest Robinson, was taken into custody Saturday. According to the news station, he is also DPD reserve officer.”

Scott’s mother, Priscilla Scott explained to a news station that her son did not own a gun. "They weren't in danger of my son," she said. "I don't feel, not Michael, he is not like that, I don't believe it."

Since the school’s security cameras were in place during the time of the incident, they will be reviewed so police can confirm Robinson’s story.
