Anyone who has grabbed a bite to eat before seeing the Tigers, the Lions, or a show at the Opera House has probably walked past the Detroit Beer Company.
Located at 1529 Broadway in the Hartz Building, just steps away from the Broadway People Mover stop, this two-story brewery is the beer lover’s dream.
Simply stepping into the front door of this historic location explains this hub’s dedication to its ales and lagers. Lining the wall on the first floor are some of DBC’s fermentation tanks, which were custom built in order to accommodate the architecture of the 110-year-old structure.
The ever-evolving list of beers includes such interesting titles as “The Detroit Dwarf,” “Broadway Light,” and “Milkshake Stout” to name a few.
But now onto the important part: DBC’s menu of delicious, varied, affordable comfort food.
Not to disappoint, there are some classic pub choices like clam chowder, fish-n-chips, and shepherd’s pie, but there are also a number of delightfully unexpected surprises.
Appearing on the appetizer list is the “Giant Soft Brewery Pretzel,” served with asiago cheese dip and stone-ground mustard, alongside fan favorites like Buffalo wings, quesadillas, and chicken fingers.
DBC’s list of salads is another unforeseen gem, considering its reputation as a brewpub. The refreshing “Michigan Cherry Salad” comes piled high with Michigan dried cherries, bleu cheese crumbles, walnuts and basil vinaigrette.
Included on the impressive list of sandwiches are the “Diamond Red Hot” made with fresh sausage from Eastern Market, the hybrid “Motown Philly,” and the always-welcome “French Dip Panino.”
But don’t forget the burgers: the “Hair of the Dog” will cure what ails you after a late night of freshly brewed DBC beer. This half-pound burger is topped with a fried egg and smoked bacon – satisfying even the worst of morning-after carbohydrate and protein cravings.
There is also a short but sweet list of house-made pizzas – the “BBQ Chicken” selection comes with Gouda and cilantro – and a dessert menu not found just anywhere. If deep-fried Twinkies put that twinkle in your eye, then DBC is the place to be.
Aside from the stunning interior, seasonal outdoor seating, historic location, and house-made beer, none of DBC’s entrees even come close to $20. Before or after a game, a show, or a good time, DBC has something for everyone.
