The gruesome discovery was made on Oct. 4 around 11 a.m. by fishermen, officials said. The man’s body was found floating face down approximately 1 ½ miles south of the beach.
The man – identified Saturday as Michael W. Neblett, 59, of Far Rockaway – was pronounced dead at 12:30 p.m. Authorities later brought the body to the Nassau County medical examiner’s office.
In a Friday news release, police said the man had been between 55 and 60 years old with an average build and balding black and gray hair. He was wearing a blue pattern buttoned shirt, red pajama pants and black slip-on shoes.
It was unclear if any criminality was suspected in Neblett’s death. Police have classified the incident as “a fatal aided.”
