The box of 28 chicks was found in front of the Petland Discounts store on Fluton Avenue in Hempstead on Friday afternoon. A store employee found the box and moved the baby chicks inside the store, officials said.
“It’s absolutely animal cruelty and abandonment,” said Det. Bob Sowers of the Nassau County Society for the Protection of Cruelty to Animals. “People who have animals have an obligation to provide proper sustenance, a health, warm and safe environment.”
The chicks have been taken to Central Veterinary Associates in Valley Stream, where veterinary staff will care for them until a permanent home can be found.
Investigators are now offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible, detectives said Saturday.
Anyone with information is urged to call the Nassau County SPCA at 516-THE-SPCA. All calls will be kept confidential.
