Luke 10:38-42 (NLT)
As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”
Over the years, we have hosted many holiday gatherings at our home. With the largest family of all our siblings, it seemed logical to be the venue for such events. Planning began way in advance by creating a menu, seating chart, list of supplies, and timeline for the day. I am administrative in nature and thrive on a schedule armed with a plan. I am “Martha” for sure who is slowly day-by-day striving to become more like “Mary”. My sister-in-love is more like “Mary”. A couple years ago, we began having Thanksgiving at her house when our son was undergoing his first cancer treatment in their hometown. It was easier to have everyone come to him rather than attempt to gather elsewhere so she graciously opened her home to our entourage. There was no menu created, everyone could sit where they like, bring what you want and stay as long as you desire was the order of the day – and yes, it was another fabulous holiday despite the lack of scheduled planning. I greatly admire this quality in her as she sees the importance of focusing on the things that are most important such as her family and friends without all the order and organization that sometimes overwhelms my life. I believe that the Lord has definitely used the last two years to keep us more in step with Him like Mary rather than becoming lost in the details of this life like “Martha”. Dealing with an ongoing family illness does not allow one to plan for the future but live day by day. Increasing medical costs do not allow for a strict family budget with daily doctor visits, prescriptions to fill and unforeseen expenses as a result. We all get worried and upset over insignificant details in life. It is inevitable if those burdens and cares are not given to the Lord. Are you lost in the details of life? Overwhelmed by circumstances beyond your control and situations that have drained all of your strength?
Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord [roll and repose each care of your load on Him]; trust (lean on, rely on, and be confident) also in Him and He will bring it to pass.
This is my favorite translation of this valuable nugget of truth found in God’s Word. How can one delight in the Lord when all hell is breaking lose in our life? How do we know that God is going to give us our heart’s desire and secret longing? Have you committed your way to the Lord? Roll and repose each care of your load on Him. Perhaps, this may be the greatest tip ever written for surrendering our life to Jesus Christ. Think of it like this...a magician will take hold of a tablecloth covering a table laden with dishes and whip it out effortlessly never disturbing a single dish but if you or I attempt the very same feat – it will probably end up in a huge mess with lots of broken plates, bowls, cups and sauces. The illusionist knows the secret to the trick and has practiced many times until he perfected it. What may seem effortless to you required a great deal of planning and practice to perfect. With this in mind, the thought of surrendering our entire life to the Lord seems overwhelming. Although the Lord is perfectly capable of taking every single burden and care that you have right now, He will not wrestle them away from you but waits patiently for you to surrender them all. Roll and repose implies a harmonic and rhythmic effort to move the cares and burdens from your shoulders to the Lord. Trust takes time and is developed in such a way. Lean on, rely on and be confident in the Lord and He will bring it to pass. We must learn to lean. It takes time to establish reliance on God. Confident hope is the fruit of productive faith that is learned in this pattern of rolling and reposing our worries, cares and burdens to God. Every single detail of your life is safe with the Lord. He doesn’t necessarily expect you to dump it all on Him. The Lord was there when you were created. He understands how you tick. The Holy Spirit is renewing your life from the inside out. With each new discovery of something that is not of God such as sin, worry or doubt, His Spirit pushes it out so that we can surrender it to the Lord. It is time to begin the process of totally surrendering our life to the Lord as we roll and repose every single care and worry to His Care.
Matthew 6:31-33 (NLT)
“So don’t worry about these things, saying, ‘What will we eat? What will we drink? What will we wear?’ These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.”
The primary goal of most people is to have a better life. As Children of God, we are promised more than a good life but a future and hope. (Jeremiah 29:11) When consumed with making this life better – we miss the opportunity to perfect our future and have all that the Lord has promised because He sees beyond today into forever. We are told to “seek first the Kingdom of God”. Imagine if in every single endeavor of life – we asked God’s Opinion, His Direction and waited for His Response. Some may think this is ridiculous and who would bother the Great and Mighty God with such overbearing details. Well, first of all – God knew us in advance. (Romans 8:29) He envisioned our very being before He ever formed us. (Psalm 139:13-15) Then He recorded every single moment of our life (Psalm 139:16) to ensure that it would all work together for our good and His Glory. (Romans 8:28) The Lord filled our life with precious promises that would fill each day with His Very Best. They are all yes and amen to those who seek first the Kingdom of God. (2 Corinthians 1:20) It would seem that the Lord does care tremendously about the details of our life as Jesus made the Way (John 14:6) for us to return to right-standing with God and have every promise ever made. So why do we worry about every little thing in life? Why do we question the care of our Father in Heaven who would go to such lengths to allow grace and mercy to get to us? We do not trust the Lord with the details of our life but choose to depend on ourselves. We do not live in right-standing with God instead trampling His Grace then wonder when He will give us everything we need. Does worry consume your thoughts today? It very well may be choking out your blessing too!
Matthew 13:22 (NLT)
The seed that fell among the thorns represents those who hear God’s word, but all too quickly the message is crowded out by the worries of this life and the lure of wealth, so no fruit is produced.
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God. (Romans 10:17) It is through faith that a righteous person finds life. (Romans 1:17) The “Martha” people in this world are often robbed of God’s Blessing trying to work for it rather than allowing the Holy Spirit to work out God’s Salvation in them. A right relationship with the Lord should not be “A” priority on our list in life but it should be “The” priority of our life. The enemy will attack the moment you make a decision to trust the Lord, rely on Jesus or lean on His Spirit to barrage you with things that “require” your attention to distract you from it. Faith is required to produce fruit. Faith is about what you do not see not what can be grasped or attained on your own. Confident hope is cultivated by those who walk by faith not by sight. Those who hear the Word of God and strive to live it out. This world is crowded with worries and a lure of wealth. But please be reminded worry cannot add a single moment to your life but rather steal precious time that could be used seeking God’s Kingdom. (Luke 12:24-26) Store up treasure in Heaven not on this earth. (Matthew 6:19-21) What you accumulate here will be left behind to rot and decay, but the wealth you create in Heaven produced by faith from a righteous heart will remain forever!
Romans 5:1-2 (NLT)
Therefore, since we have been made right in God’s sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us. Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of undeserved privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God’s glory.
Faith in Jesus Christ promotes us to a position of divine inheritance. It also is a humble position as one surrenders their whole life to Jesus Christ. That’s right all of it leaving nothing out. This is most definitely a requirement to have all that the Lord has promised. We must seek the Lord wholeheartedly (Jeremiah 29:13) to come out of captivity and live in the Light of His Love. It is a place of undeserved privilege that no one could obtain on their own making full dependency of Jesus Christ essential! Without faith in Jesus, there is no righteousness. Without righteousness, there is no access to God! “Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.” The words in I Peter 5 are not a message to nonbelievers but was an exhortation to the Body of Christ. Reminding them to remain humble before the Lord, to stay alert and stand firm in faith. God has called us to bring glory to His Great Name. All of this required to do so. You only have to seek the Lord and He will do the rest to allow His Glory to shine through our life. Think about it. What glory would come to God if you were starving and destitute? Who would want to serve a God like that? Well, if you are calling yourself a Christian but remain caught up in the details of this life always worried, complaining and overloaded – guess what? That is what they are thinking already! By giving your life to the Lord in trust and service, it is a declaration that you believe by faith in the Power of God and all of His Goodness. This will allow His Glory to reach you through a divine connection created by undeserved privilege. This is what the Lord wants to do in you and through you. “Do not let sin control the way you live; do not give in to sinful desires. Do not let any part of your body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead, give yourselves completely to God, for you were dead, but now you have new life. So use your whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.” (Romans 6:12-13) If you want the new life that the Lord has promised, it will requiring giving up this life to have it. Any part of you given to pursing the things of this world is in rebellion to the Kingdom of God. The only thing of worth in this life are the souls of people. Everything is will rot and decay with no eternal value. Move over Mary, Martha it’s time to press in! The list will get done if it is part of His Plan. The house will get cleaned if it brings glory to His Name. The kids will make it to practice unless the Lord has something better for them to do. It is time to wholeheartedly seek the Lord with all that you are. Give Jesus every detail of your life and allow Him to make His Goodness come to pass. Stop working so hard and worrying all the way. It is time to roll and repose the heavy burdens of life to the Lord so you can worship Him and come boldly to His Throne. He will meet you there and bring restoration, support and the strength you so desperately need!
Romans 8:26-30 (NLT)
And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. For God knew his people in advance, and he chose them to become like his Son, so that his Son would be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And having chosen them, he called them to come to him. And having called them, he gave them right standing with himself. And having given them right standing, he gave them his glory.
As modern day believers, we have a gift that Mary and Martha may not have experienced. The Holy Spirit lives on the inside of us which means that Jesus Christ is with us always! We do not have to wander through life looking for the Way – He shows it to us in every moment using every single breath and footstep for His Glory! You are the Glory of God waiting to happen! With this holy inhabitation comes this promise – “God causes everything to work together for the GOOD of those who love God and are called according to His Purpose.” Selah, my friend. Rest in the Peace of God with the Mind of Christ knowing that everything is going according to Plan – His Plan which always produces His Glory in our life! Refuse to get lost in the insignificant details of life. Stop worrying all the time. Roll and repose your burdens to Jesus Christ. He loves you! It’s okay Martha everything will get done by the Power of God and to the Glory of His Great Name!
Philippians 1:10-11 (NLT)
For I want you to understand what really matters, so that you may live pure and blameless lives until the day of Christ’s return. May you always be filled with the fruit of your salvation—the righteous character produced in your life by Jesus Christ—for this will bring much glory and praise to God.
