On Feb. 22, NBC News revealed new information about the four teens from David Douglas High School in Portland, Ore. accused of kidnapping a fellow schoolmate, bashing him with a crowbar, and shooting him with a BB gun in his hand, chest and groin - before carving a swastika into his forehead with a box cutter.
Blue Kalmbach, 15, Jenna Montgomery, 15, and Jess Taylor, 17, pleaded not guilty in a Portland courtroom this week to kidnapping, assault, and menacing charges connected to the Feb. 10 attack on 16-year-old Dustyn Murrain. The three alleged kidnappers are being held on $3 million bail, each.
The three who are 15 and older were charged as adults with about 20 counts each, including kidnapping, robbery and assault. The 14-year-old boy will be prosecuted in juvenile court.
Because of his juvenile status, the 14-year-old suspect is not being identified.
Yesterday, the principal of David Douglas High School, John Bier, said that the victim and alleged kidnappers were "only vaguely involved" with his school. Bier told police that once upon a time, all five of the teens were friends – “but had a falling out.”
In a court affidavit filed this week, Murrain’s four hour torture session only ended when his alleged attackers moved him from the shed where he was being brutalized so that he could withdraw funds from an ATM for his captors. That’s when Murrain made his escape and ran to a nearby automotive shop where he asked employees there to call the cops.
The teen said a schoolmate, 15-year-old Jenna Montgomery, asked him to hang out after school and when he got there, she led him to a shed. Blue Kalmbach, 15, was waiting there and shot him with a BB gun before carving a swastika into his head with a box cutter.
The assistant district attorney’s affidavit stated that Taylor spent an evening plotting just how the group would torture Murrain.
Taylor was the mastermind of the plan, police say.
According to The Daily News, after Montgomery lured her victim into that shed, it was Kalmbach that allegedly hit Murrain with a crowbar, shot him in numerous places across his body with a BB gun after making him take off his shirt, and ultimately carved that swastika into his forehead with a razor blade knife.
Police caught up with the teen suspects in a house located near the shed where Murrain was assaulted.
Kelli Murrain, the victim’s mother, said that the swastika carved into her son’s forehead is being treated with a silicon patch for now to aid in the healing process, although she can’t promise that the hate symbol will ever completely disappear.
"He's been severely traumatized not just physically, but emotionally. It's something he's going to live with forever, especially if the scar of (a) swastika doesn't go away. Every time he looks in the mirror he's gonna have that memory."
