After the dust settled in the release of information yesterday, Feb. 17, 2013 about Bungie's new adventure and as media outlets post information that they received while at their Seattle studio, there were some downsides that were revealed to this announcement.
First was that the new First-Person "shared world shooter" will initially only be released for Xbox and Playstation as Bungie refers to the game as a "console shooter" according to IGN. There is a small glimmer of hope as Bungie COO Pete Parsons talked to PC Gamer and said, "I’d say we would absolutely love to be on PC," and continued with, "If you go upstairs and talk to the people upstairs, we play on all platforms. So stay tuned." At the moment Bungie will be focusing on the consoles but Activision has said that "Until anything’s officially announced, from the first parties, obviously we can’t comment on any platforms that might be forthcoming. But what we can say is that we’re building Destiny to be wherever gamers are. And we want this to be one of the great video game franchises and entertainment franchise for the next decade." The best case scenario is that Bungie will start with the console platform and if the game takes off will focus on making a PC port, which is better than a flat out no.
The next downside to all of this excitement is the game will probably not be out in 2013. Activision has stated that it doesn't expect anything from Bungie this year in a financial call to investors. This will give Bungie an ample amount of time to release gameplay footage and screenshots over the year to keep players invested in the progress they are making and give fans more details on the game itself. Earlier in the fall of 2012 Bungie announced they were already beta testing for "Destiny" but don't expect to see footage or screenshots from that.
As the year goes on Bungie and Activision will release more details regarding the release date and an official list of platforms it will be released on. The initial look on the game seems very promising and the game seems a lot like a Borderlands-type game which has seen a huge amount of success in its sequel which is not bad company to be in.
