Bungie provided an update to Destiny Friday with a special focus on the Hellmouth location on the moon that was revealed this week for the upcoming PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 sci-fi fantasy shooter.

According to Lead Environment Artist Sam Jones, the Hellmouth has only one function - "to ask of the player what lies within."

If that doesn't sound foreboding enough, the Hellmouth is inhabited by the alien race known as the Hive which is essentially an undead extraterrestrial race. Not much else is currently known about the race but the video released showed the use of metallic armor, optical enhancements, and plasma-based weapons such as an energy sword. They even appear to be able to summon energy based attacks similar to the Guardians that gamers will play.

As far as the Hellmouth itself, it is a fortress cored deep into the Moon that is supposed to "conjure up imagery associated with a medieval castle" according to Bungie. Other visual themes include "mystery, darkness, evil, strength and militarism." While players battle their way down through the fortress, they'll notice a gigantic chain that goes down between the floors. This chain keeps the Hive's most fearsome creatures locked in at the bottom which should be something to look forward to.

The Hellmouth is but one location on the moon for players to explore in Destiny. There will be more though Bungie isn't saying just how many yet.

Exploring it shouldn't be too far away though as the Destiny beta is planned for early 2014 for the PS4, PS3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 with pre-orders guaranteeing the ability to get in. The game itself will launch sometime in the spring of 2014.
