'Destiny' alpha test this week, beta date announced and white PS4 bundle

Sony dropped a handful of “Destiny” bombs for the PS4 during its E3 2014 press conference Monday. The conference kicked off with a trailer that established the background of the game world before Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House dropped details on not just Beta access but an early Alpha look as well.

The “Destiny” beta will launch for the PS4 and PS4 first on July 17, House revealed. That’s not all though as a preview Alpha test will be available for PS4 owners starting this Thursday, June 12 and runs through Sunday, June 15. If you’re interested in the alpha, you need to go to to register for a chance to participate. If selected, a code will be sent to the e-address associate with your PSN ID.

House also announced a white PS4 that is bundled with “Destiny” and a 30-day Playstation Plus subscription. The bundle will be at the regular $449.99 price that the standard black console sells at. The bundle will launch on Sept. 9, 2014 alongside “Destiny.”

Since this was a Sony Playstation conference, there were no details on when “Destiny” for the Xbox One and Xbox 360 would be released. Current rumors are that the beta will be available on the competing systems four days after the PS4 and PS3 beta starts.

Meanwhile, the “Destiny” trailer revealed the story of how the Traveller arrived in our solar system and set off a golden age of humanity. Planets like Mars, Venus and Mercury all became habitable, the human lifespan tripled and man began exploring and colonizing.

However, the Traveler was being pursued by malevolent darkness intent on destroying it. After eons of for searching, the darkness finally found the Traveler and nearly ended humanity. Now an AI voiced by “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage is gathering Guardian, people with special abilities left over by the Traveler to defend humanity from the dark forces that have returned.

The timed exclusivity of the “Destiny” beta combined with the white PS4 bundle is a savvy move by Sony. It should help continue the momentum of console sales despite the course correction by Microsoft for the Xbox One.

Correction: The price of the bundle is $449.99, not $399.99
