Destination Daytona Beach: Family-Friendly and Fun

Daytona Beach has so much to offer families!
Maria Smith

Author's note: I received travel and accommodations to Daytona Beach to view their family-friendly offerings. All opinions are my own. This is the first in a series of articles to highlight the best family-orientated things to see, do, and eat in Daytona Beach.

Daytona Beach is a family destination today. The "World's Greatest Beach" is not the Daytona Beach from the 80's and 90's full of drunk Spring Breakers. Not at all! You are much more likely to see a bunch of matching cheerleaders in town for a cheer competition, families pushing strollers, or grandparents trying to keep up with their preteen grandkids, than a gang of college kids. Daytona Beach is really a bustling eclectic town full of off-the-beaten path things to see, go and do. It is truly a family destination.

Only a quick one hour flight from Atlanta, or a 5-6 hour drive, Daytona Beach is a convenient destination for Georgians, especially with a family in tow. It is a lush oasis full of fragrant flowers, dense vegetation, and clear blue ocean waters. This city is not the least bit pretentious, but rather has a "que sera sera" attitude that lends itself to the overall culture in the area. It's sexy but safe. Daytona Beach is famous for giving people a little more leeway than other cities, like letting cars drive on the beach (albeit at 10 mph and under strict ordinances). It is fun and relaxing and feels both familiar and strange at the same time. And visitors should know to put their diets on hold during a vacation here because the food can be as rich and indulgent as one wants it to be.

Families will love visiting Daytona Beach. Obviously the beach and ocean are the main draw, but there are dozens of educational and entertaining places to go as well. Climb the 203 steps to the top of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse. See birds and turtles being rescued at the Marine Science Center. Let the kids run through the Children's Museum wing at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. Book a Stand Up Paddleboarding lesson from Three Brothers Boards. Take the tour of the Daytona International Speedway. There really is something for everyone here.

Daytona Beach is southern genteel meets southern NASCAR. Families can find the best of both worlds jam-packed into this cute Old Florida beach town. Give it a try! Enjoy!
