Drumming for doggies? Leave it to San Diego County folks to come up with such a unique way of helping animals and others.
A “Midsummer Mandala” to benefit Helen Woodward Animal Center will offer not only a drumming performance, home-baked goodies, an auction, a raffle, and other fun, but also some insights into self-empowerment at Starcrafts Bookstore in La Mesa this Thursday evening.
But what’s a mandala?
Luanna Swaney, spokesperson for a group called 24/7, who organized the event, said it will be “a midsummer celebration where participants will create a mandala of prosperity and celebration. The mandala represents wholeness, and can be seen as a model for the organizational structure.”
She explained further that “24/7 is a group of 7 people who are working together for a year of self-empowerment. The current focus of our group is to ‘help those who could not help themselves.’ Once we identified this as our goal we narrowed it down even further to assist charities that help animals, children, homebound people, and senior citizens. Helen Woodward Animal Center provides programs for all of these groups.”
All proceeds from the event will benefit the Center
Once the news about Midsummer Mandala began to spread, Swaney said, “others wanted to join the efforts to help... Starcrafts is donating their book store to hold the event. A drumming group is donating their performance. We’re receiving donations of items for the live auction, silent auction and raffle. People have been so generous.”
Auction items will include artwork, a quilt, jewelry, gift baskets, and various services, she said.
Have items you’d like to donate for the auction? They’re tax-deductible, and can be dropped off at Starcrafts during regular business hours.
