CNS News reports today that the federal National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded a grant of $2.7 million to study if lesbians have a higher risk for “hazardous drinking.” This news is revealed only days after story about a study to look into why 75 percent of lesbian women are overweight. The study, being conducted at the University of Illinois, is titled “Cumulative Drinking in a Community of Adult Lesbians.”
As reported by CNS News the study aims to create “culturally sensitive” strategies to prevent problem drinking among lesbians.
The description of the grant for the study says, “Studies using both probability and nonprobability samples provide ample evidence of lesbians' vulnerability to hazardous drinking,” the grant’s description reads. “However, very little is known about the factors that increase lesbians' risk for hazardous drinking.”
The theory posed is lesbians have more stress and “traumatic events” that lead to the higher probability of alcoholism among lesbians that is believed to exist. NIH suggests that more than seven drinks in a week or more than three per day are “hazardous drinking” for women.
The University of Illinois says, “The study is being led by Tonda Hughes, professor at the Department of Health Systems Science at the University of Illinois, an “internationally recognized expert in the area of alcohol use among lesbians.”
Stories like this one and the previous one about the study into why lesbians have a high probability of being overweight are raising questions and spurring debate about the proper role of government in funding such studies and which studies are appropriate uses of taxpayer money at a time when the federal government is approaching $17 trillion of national debt. Citizens and politicians alike are questioning how and why taxpayer dollars are spent on these kinds of studies.
One reader reacted to the story by posting this in the comments: “I'm a lesbian trapped in a mans body. I love women. Care to study that. Send me $2,700,000.00 and I'll tell you all about it over drinks.”
Talk show host Howard Stern, considered by some to be an expert on lesbians, has reportedly not yet commented on this study.
