According to the Movies Based On True Stories Archives, the true story made headlines in 1991 when a pregnant woman's boat capsized while on an excursion with several other experienced sailors. Allison Wilcox survived the most dire conditions but was later rescued after spending 12 days stranded at sea, according to the New York Times.
