DeSoto's Spence wins his first match in fashion in World Championships

Errol Spence of DeSoto has just won his first round match in the AIBA Men's World Championships in Baku, Azerbaijan. Because of his earlier tournament wins, Spence needs only a 10th place finish in this tournament to become the USA's welterweight (152 lbs.) Olympic representative next year (2012) in London, England.

Spence, known as "EJ," scored a 28-10 victory over Amir Ghasemi of Iran.

Next Spence will face Canadian Custio Clayton Sunday evening.

Spence had the USA Olympic Boxing team coaches instructing him in his corner, along with his father, Errol Spence Sr.

After winning the US Olympic Boxing Trials in Mobile, Ala, Spence took a little time off before leaving for Colorado Springs, CO. which is home to the USA training facility.
