Designing your dream home

See also

Designing your dream home can be fun, but it is also one of the biggest challenges that many people take on. During this process, it’s important to keep several things in mind in order to make sure you get what you want and keep your project within budget. In particular, pay attention to these areas when designing your dream home.
Heating and Cooling Costs
The one thing that most people want in their dream home is space, but empty space takes a lot of work to heat and cool. High ceilings and extra rooms will add a lot to your monthly utility bills. Fortunately, there are ways to decrease this cost without decreasing your extra space. Consider building some rooms with lower ceilings, and increasing the insulation throughout the entire house. Constructing a home with energy efficient doors and windows is also a good idea. If you have a particularly large home, you may want to consider more than one heating and cooling system. This will allow you choose which rooms to heat and cool.
Windows
One of the most desired features in a home is a great view of the surrounding area. In order to do this, it’s important to put in large windows that face towards the best views. Of course, it is critical to really think about the placement and quality of these windows. Large windows are a great way to show off a great view, but poor quality ones can be terribly energy inefficient. Fortunately, there are a number of large windows available on the market that are designed to keep heat and cold air from entering a home. Specialty tints can also limit the amount of sunlight that comes in (and the heat that comes with it). Take some time to really look at your options in windows.
Outdoor Space
After you spend so much time insuring that you have a good view of the outside, make sure that the outside of your home is something you want to look at. Many people designing their dream home spend a lot of time on the inside and think very little about the outside. This means they oftentimes will build a home with yards that are too small. Avoid this mistake by taking a few moments to think about what you want on the outside. Plan space for a pool, outdoor cooking area, and/or porches on the outside of the home. Also make sure that these spaces are planned so that they do not block a view of the surrounding area.
Planning and building your dream home is a process that can require a lot of work. Make sure to think about every detail in your new home, and seek out the advice of a lot of different construction professionals.
