Designing Heidi’s red carpet look on ‘Project Runway’ after the Emmys

This episode of designing a red carpet dress for Heidi’s attendance at the recent Creative Arts Emmy Awards was like putting the cart before the horse. Most viewers may have been under the impression it’s for the upcoming Primetime Emmys. That was not the case on “Project Runway” Thursday.

She clearly mentioned to the designers it was for the Creative Arts Emmys, a precursor to the televised Emmys. The Creative Arts award primarily is for technical merit and other televised non-fiction programming, such as the reality TV genre.

What this all means is the Creative Arts Emmys was already over and done with prior to the airing of this episode. Someone in production must have got confused, and scheduled it a week too soon. Before the show aired all you needed to do was Google Heidi, red carpet, Emmys and...Voila. There was the winning design she wore down the red carpet.

At least that was one blatant spoiler out of the way. However, nothing was revealed as to who was the winning designer until Heidi came for her inspection. Sean Kelly from New Zealand informed Heidi he was working on a royal blue dress with fringe. What is with all this fringe so far this season? Isn’t that a bit costumey? You see loads of fringe on shows like “Dancing with the Stars.”

When Heidi came into the workroom for her inspection with Tim Gunn, you could hear the designers saying “Hi Heidi.” This is reminiscent of the “Hi Heidi” doll from the 1960s and 1970s. There was even a popular TV commercial for this doll with blonde hair like Heidi Klum.

Heidi was not impressed with a number of designers. Mitchell was giving her dress devil horns, while Korina was going literal with a hideous hunter’s green and real snakeskin gown. It was supposed to be a snake in the grass. Afterwards, the meltdowns started to flow for Mitchell and Korina, the mean ones from the premiere episode. Kristine was truly struggling, but is professional as always.

Showing some generosity was Heidi who gave the designers an additional $100 each to go back to Mood for more fabric. Not all of them went back. At least Sandhya asked some if she could have their money, since they weren’t going anyways. Sandhya’s got chutzpah.

After all the tears and anxiety, it was time for the runway show. There was Sean’s stunning royal blue dress that looked fantastic on camera. The fringe was almost non-existent until the model made her turn. Otherwise, it was a flattering dress for a red carpet event, colorful and full of flair.

Kini’s sexy black dress was brilliant. It’s definitely something you’d see at the Oscars. Amanda’s was interesting with beading in the front, yet the back part of the dress was the definitive stand-out. Sean was the winner, since many viewers likely saw the red carpet photos from the previous weekend Emmy event. Way to go “Project Runway.”

The bottom three was naturally Kristine, Mitchell, and Korina. The judges loathed Korina’s dress. At least they liked something about Kristine’s “A wardrobe malfunction about to happen” cocktail style design. Mitchell’s workmanship with the zipper was appalling. It immediately sent him home. In a surprising twist Kristine was also eliminated. Korina stays, even with the worst red carpet gown ever designed on the show.
