Menachem Rosensaft presumably knows more than a little about the Holocaust, as indicated in his Huffington Post biography (excerpt):
Menachem Z. Rosensaft, a lawyer in New York City, is the Founding Chairman of the International Network of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors, Vice President of the American Gathering of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and Their Descendants, Chairman of the Editorial Board of the Holocaust Survivors’ Memoirs Project, a joint publishing endeavor with Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, and a former National President of the Labor Zionist Alliance.
His parents survived the horror of the Auschwitz and Bergen-Belsen concentration camps, his wife's grandfather was slaughtered by the Nazis and he was himself born in the Displaced Persons camp at Bergen-Belsen after the war.
In short, he cannot claim even the weak excuse of being unaware of the genocidal consequences awaiting a citizenry incapable of effectively resisting an out-of-control government bent on monstrous evil. He knows what the "government monopoly on force," so beloved of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence and Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) has so often led to, as he writes in the Huffington Post:
In August of 1941, SS men rounded up the Jewish leaders and intellectuals of the Belarus town of Ivye and machine gunned them to death before burying them anonymously in a mass grave. Among them was my wife Jeanie's grandfather. The following month, on September 29-30, 1941, more than 30,000 Jews were similarly murdered in a ravine called Babi Yar in the Ukrainian city of Kiev. Machine guns preceded Zyklon B gas as the Germans' preferred means of committing mass genocide.
But from this experience of the evil committed with guns in the hands of the government's hired muscle, he has concluded that empowering the government's enforcers to disarm private citizens is necessary and proper:
Many in the extreme gun rights crowd, however, apparently consider their unfettered ability to purchase high clip [?] semi-automatic weapons at gun shows without having to register them with anyone anywhere more important than the sanctity of life. They will go to the barricades to defend the ability of John Q. Public to purchase an AR-15 -- the type of semi-automatic used to murder the children at Sandy Hook Elementary School -- anywhere, at any time, without any limitations or restrictions whatsoever.
Knowing full well the epic scope of genocidal mass murder that can be perpetrated by a government, unless millions of determined and well armed "John Q. Publics" are prepared to stop it, he nevertheless wants to dramatically reduce the firepower available to the citizenry.
There is a term for that kind of person, although one could argue that it is unfairly and prejudicially cruel--to bagels.
