The Derrico quintuplets – Five new babies are just about doubling the size of this Vegas family. A birth of three girls and two boys to any new mother would be quite overwhelming. Not so much for multi-baby mom Evonne Derrico, who already has four other small children. Now, the nine-member Derrico family can field a full team of baseball players, and likely will need a small bus to cart her brood around town.
The Las Vegas Sun is reporting Sept. 11 that the 33-year-old Arizona mother is resting today in a Phoenix hospital with her five new children, whom she carried almost full term – an oddity for having quintuplets. Most multiple births of three or more are delivered around the 7-month mark.
How does mom tell them all apart? For now, the new additions all begin with the letter “d.” Deniko, Dariz, Deonee, Daician and Daiten (It’s unclear which are the boys and which are the girls at this point) are all reportedly doing well in the neonatal intensive care unit.
The Derrico’s other four children all have names that begin with “D” as well, making mom the only one without the “D.D.” initials.
Each preemie weighs less than 3 pounds, but that is normal, and father Deon Derrico said his five new “D’s” are all healthy and happy.
"To be blessed with this type of gift is just magnificent," Deon said.
"To go from four for nine, that's a level of preparation that requires you be a billionaire," Deon said. "But whatever has to be done to take care of my children, I'm going to do it."
The 42-year-old dad works as a property manager for a real estate company, and the family lives in a 2,900-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Las Vegas. Deon and Evonne initially thought they would be having quadruplets, but doctors discovered a fifth baby during a later sonogram.
The couple did not use fertility drugs, but they did admit to having four miscarriages in the past.
"God is good,” Deon said. "He gave us all those four back plus one on schedule."
Any more kid's planned?
"We've always talked about between 11 and 12 children," he said. "I want as many children as God will bless me with."
