Chicago Bulls star point guard Derrick Rose will attend the USA Basketball training camp this summer in Las Vegas and will have the opportunity to make the World Cup Team according to Mike Krzyzewski on May 20.
Rose was limited to just 10 games this season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee this past season. He suffered his latest knee injury on Nov. 22. Rose appeared in 39 games in 2012-13 season before suffering a season ending ACL injury.
The 2011 NBA MVP did not look like his old self last season as he didn’t have explosiveness he previously demonstrated, which caused his shooting percentage to plummet to a career-low 35.4 percent. Rose averaged 15.9 points and 4.3 assists during the 10-game stint.
Krzyzewski speaking to ESPN’s Andy Katz on ESPNU College Basketball podcast said that he wants to see if Rose is healthy and has the same explosiveness.
“We expect him to be there that last week of July when we’re choosing the team in Vegas,” Krzyzewski told Katz. “He can’t make the team unless he’s ready to go full bore. And knowing Derrick I would think he’ll be ready, and hopefully he’ll be 100 percent.”
Rose is back practicing and started to take contact earlier this month according to Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau.
There is a pool of 28 players that Krzyewski and his staff will choose from.for the World Cup, to be held Aug. 30 to Sept. 14. Only 12, however, will make the Spain-bound team.
“ It's a fluid group, so you're always waiting to the end of the playoffs to find out contractually, physically, and family-wise who you actually have," Krzyzewski said on the podcast. "It's a very fluid situation.”
Kevin Durant, Kevin Love, Anthony Davis, Blake Griffin, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving are locks to make the team if they choose to play. Kawhi Leonard probably has also sewn up a roster spot .
Rose will likely be one of the players fighting for one of the five or six open spots, along with Russell Westbrook and Damian Lilliard.
LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony have will not participate for Team USA this summer but may in 2016. Deron Williams may need offseason surgery on both his ankles and his availability is a question mark.
