Dermatologist Shares New Ultrasound Technology

In the previous article, we shared The American Academy of Dermatology new medical advancement probiotics and its benefits to our skin. Now we are going to discuss another recent advancement of The Academy- how ultrasound technology is cutting down back fat.

Many women have undergone this problem on their bodies. This excess back fat that bulges along the bra line is certainly an embarrassing thing. Which is why dermatologists are testing new technology for back fat resistant to diet and exercise.

In an ongoing small study, dermatologists are testing a non-invasive technology known as high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU). This technique is designed to target and safely eliminate excess back and bra fat. Dr. Cheryl Karcher, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist with the American Academy of Dermatology and assistant clinical professor of dermatology at New York University (NYU) talked to Brandi Walker about how this technological advancement works, the criteria a candidate must meet to obtain this procedure and the early findings of the ongoing study on the procedure.

1. How does High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) safely eliminate excess back and bra fat? The acoustic energy is focused to a specific depth and area beneath the skin and transformed into heat. This heat then safely destroys the targeted fat cells and does not affect the surrounding tissue. In an area rich in anatomical structures such as the bra/back fat, it is very important that the procedure is performed by an experienced physician to ensure optimum safety.

2. What is the criteria interested candidates must meet to obtain this procedure? Candidates must have at least an inch of fat to pinch in the treatment area. If a patient has fat hanging over their bra they're probably a candidate. It is not a procedure for weight loss or for persons with obesity. Many other factors are involved in choosing the ideal candidate. An individual consultation is required for each person.

3. What were the early findings from the ongoing study of this technological procedure? Early findings show this to be an excellent option for the treatment of bra/back fat. In the pilot study, 80 percent of patients had great results with excellent patient satisfaction. Patients reported that they could finally wear body conscious tops again.

4. How much more effective is HIFU in removing excess body fat compared to other methods? Liposuction remains the gold standard for treating isolated fat pads, but, it is an invasive procedure that many people don't want. HIFU has proven to be just as efficacious in the appropriate patients. It is the procedure of choice when looking for non-invasive treatment option for back fat.
