Someone asked me how I like my new derma e Stop Itch lotion? The container is empty.
Yep, I used it all up. That lets you know how good it is.
I have an acre yard with woods out in the Hoosier countryside. That means plenty of yard work, which I usually don’t mind. It’s good exercise, clears the mind and lets me think about what I’ve just written or plan to write.
But I am a poison ivy magnet. If the three-leaflet-green vine is anywhere around, it finds me. I know that every spring I’m going to get it, along with a couple of times throughout the summer. No way to avoid the poison ivy in my yard.
So I’ve become a bit of an expert on how to stop the painful itch before you get it and what to do once it gets a hold on your skin. An estimated 350,000 Americans are affected each year by poison ivy so I’m in good company.
I had heard about the derma e products and thought I’d give them a try. The box delivered to my door contained the derma e Stop Itch, derma e Tea Tree and E Oil, derma e Tea Tree and E Antiseptic Crème and the derma e Age-Defying Moisturizer SPF 15.
I started with the Stop Itch because, of course, I had a streak of poison ivy marching across my wrist. Wearing gloves, long sleeve shirt, long pants and boots doesn’t totally protect me from the invasive ivy. I put my usual lotion on the rash before bed. When it didn’t do much good, I opened my new Stop Itch in the middle of the night. It does work, thank goodness.
The smell is soothing to me. If you’ve never used tea tree oil, you might not like the strong scent but I do. It reminds me of some old-time remedy my grandmother used to put on us for bug bites and other skin irritations. Stop Itch also contains oats, chamomile, evening primrose and calendula, plus it is infused with peppermint oil for speedy relief.
That is one of the main things I like about the derma e products – besides the fact that they work – they use natural products like botanicals, proven vitamins and antioxidants. The company also doesn’t test its products on animals. That is extremely important to me. I live with a black dog named Pepper and choose not to support products that use animals for research.
A sticker on the product notes that it offers “skincare solutions, natural ingredients, cruelty free, paraben free and eco friendly.” No artificial colors are used in the products.
The Stop Itch comes in a two-ounce wide-mouth container. It is said to provide instant relief from itching associated with dry skin, insect bites, poison ivy, poison oak, poison sumac and other causes.
The derma e Tea Tree and E Oil comes in a one-ounce wide-mouth bottle. It is easy to apply and is not greasy. Nicknamed “the medicine kit in a bottle,” the Tea Tree and E Oil is a permanent part of my travel toiletry bag. I usually take only carry-on luggage and the small bottle of Tea Tree and E Oil easily fits in my see-through toiletry bag that goes through security.
The oil is said to treat a multitude of skin problems. I used it on an insect bite that I got while climbing around the ruins of Italy and was able to forget about my discomfort. It is handy to have around.
The derma e Tea Tree and E Antiseptic Crème comes in a four-ounce, wide-mouth plastic container. It’s said to be good for sunburn, rashes, dermatitis, insect bites, blemishes and dryness. I’ve tried it on insect bites and poison ivy rash and it does seem to work. The cream is not greasy and absorbs well into the skin.
The container of derma e Age-defying Moisturizer SPF 15 is the lotion I use before bed each night. I would use it as my daytime face moisturizer but I need an SPF higher than 15. Seldom a day goes by that I am not out in the sun for one reason or another. But I do like the way the Age-Defying Moisturizer goes on smoothly without a greasy feel or a perfumed smell. It feels light and refreshing on my face.
CREATION OF THE COMPANY
So how did this company gets its start? Surprisingly, it has been around for nearly 30 years and offers more than 80 products. The story goes that the company didn’t start out in the beauty aisle or the board room. It began in a local health food store in Southern California when the Stearn family realized that topical application of Vitamin E would benefit skin health.
The Stearn’s first product was a jar of 12,000 I.U. Vitamin E Moisturizing Crème. People loved it and others heard about it. derma e was founded in 1984 by David Stearn and Dr. Linda Miles. Today, the company has grown to become one of the largest natural facial care brands in the United States.
Miles promotes a simple philosophy for skin care and for overall health, in general.
“I firmly believe that our skin is the outward expression of our inner health,” she has said. “We cannot have vibrant, healthy skin without a healthy lifestyle and a healthy body.”
To help nourish the body and the skin, Dr. Miles recommends eating a balanced diet with fresh fruits and vegetables, taking an antioxidant-rich supplement, drinking approximately eight glasses of water a day, exercising, getting a good night’s sleep and minimizing stress.
“Although the skin receives its nutrients from the blood and therefore does get some of the antioxidants that we consume, research shows that applying antioxidants topically is the fastest way to help support and protect your skin,” Miles said.
“Nourishing your skin with antioxidant-rich crèmes and serums can help prevent and diminish fine lines and wrinkles, soothe inflammation, even skin tone and improve texture and elasticity.”
I like that philosophy and realize that I better be ordering another batch of Stop Itch. Time to get the yard ready for winter. Probably means more close encounters with poison ivy.
