Derevi, Empyrial Tactician is one of the newest "Magic: The Gathering" cards spoiled today Oct. 7, 2013 and will be joining Jeleva, Nephalia's Scourge and Prossh, Skyraider of Kher in Wizards of the Coast's upcoming multiplayer product "Commander" (2013 Edition)." Revealed in an update to www.mtgcommander.net, Derevi, Empyrial Tactician is the first card to have an alternate cost from the command zone.
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician - GWU
Legendary Creature - Bird Wizard (Mythic Rare)
Whenever Derevi, Empyrial Tactician enters the battlefield or a creature you control deals combat damage to a player, you may tap or untap target permanent.
1GWU: Put Derevi onto the battlefield from the command zone.
Derevi, Empyrial Tactician may not be the most intimidating creature by itself as a 2/3 flyer for three, however this bird will keep coming back for more fun over and over again. Normally when your commander dies you can choose to place it in the command zone instead of your graveyard and add a counter to it. Every counter makes your commander cost an additional two mana to cast again from the command zone. Derevi, Empyrial Tactician circumvents this with its activated ability, which only costs four mana. That's less expensive than playing Derevi, Empyrial Tactician a second time from the command zone.
It's Derevi, Empyrial Tactician combination of abilities that make it so great. Every time one of your creatures deals combat damage to another player you'll be able to tap or untap a permanent on the battlefield. One option is to simply untap your attackers, so you have blockers on another player's turn. Another is to tap one of your rival's creatures, leaving them vulnerable to your other opponents. You could also choose to untap your lands, allowing you to cast additional spells or activate more abilities.
Because Derevi, Empyrial Tactician's ability also triggers when it enters the battlefield, you can create an infinite loop generating an ungodly amount of mana when you combine if you target Gilded Lotus (or any card that taps for three or more mana) and pair it with Deadeye Navigator. Simply tap your artifact for three mana, using two to activate Deadeye Navigator. Derevi, Empyrial Tactician will be exiled and then enter the battlefield, allowing you to repeat this process as many times as you wish.
Let's not forget that Derevi, Empyrial Tactician is both a Bird and a Wizard, two creature types that have a wealth of support cards for you to abuse in any deck you construct with this new legend.
How will you use Derevi, Empyrial Tactician?
