Derek Hough knows blackface is racist and the backlash following his sister's Halloween costume has been an absolutely nightmare -- so he's sticking up for her... sort of. On Oct. 29, MSN reported that Derek spoke out about his sister's costume (she dressed as "Crazy Eyes" from "Orange Is the New Black" and wore an orange jumpsuit and full blackface) and while he's sympathetic (knowing his sister didn't mean to be racist), he's also realistic (it was a dumb move).
"She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever. She is just beyond beside herself. She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry, and I just hope that we can all forgive her and move on," Derek said.
Derek Hough knows blackface isn't acceptable... ever... but he also knows that his sister didn't mean to offend any one. That said, people in this country know that donning blackface is one of the most racist things a person can do. For Julianne to actually put make-up on her face to make her "look" black -- and not even think that anything was wrong with that? Well, her brother Derek says it best...
"Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life but hopefully we can move on," he said. There is no question that Julianne wants all of this publicity to just go away. Fast.
Derek Hough's sister's blackface was in no way acceptable and it was rather shocking... but he's right. It's time for people to move on.
