This past year we saw the last of minor penalties, the death of the multiple whistle to release the jammers, and the demise of geography based divisions within WFTDA. And to look back on fondness of 2011, Derby News Network on Fruday released their ‘Best of 2011.”
Awards for bout of the year, and best rivalry are just some of the highlights from this past season.
The bout of the year, with 18 percent of the vote went to the WFTDA Championship 3rd place which featured Denver overtaking Texas 210-99. Two of the best in our sport put on a heck of a show for those in attendance and those watching on WFTDA.tv.
Of all the categories that were voted on, my favorite was 'best rivalry' with the winners receiving 38 percent of the vote. Oly vs Everyone ran away with the honor, an example of overreaction, by quite a few in the derby community.
It all started when Hockey Honey, Joy Collison and Atomatrix transferred to Oly just before the beginning of Western Regionals. Looking at the situation, one would have thought the three of them along with Oly league management burned down an orphanage, all because of forming what amounted to a roller derby select team. The website Hellarad was one of the first to label them as 'sell outs', spurning an avalanche of hate from all corners of the derby-verse. The message that seemed to have gotten lost in all of this, is that roller derby is a sport - the idea of which is to win. As long as a player or league is not cheating, nothing else should matter.
