A Denver man is accused of bludgeoning another man to death with a baseball bat, claiming he is “God” and that the man he killed was the “Devil.” Zachery Joseph Cooper, 25, allegedly used a baseball bat to beat 70-year-old Peter Morales to death, reports the Christian Post on Oct. 18.
The City Park, Denver man was arrested last Tuesday in the 2800 block of Adams Street. Cooper allegedly claimed to have "killed the Devil," Denver police wrote in court documents released Thursday.
Paramedics responding to the gruesome scene said the elderly man's throat had been slit as well. Janet Segura, Cooper’s mother and a witness to the aftermath, said she left her home that she shares with Cooper and returned to find her son naked, bloodied, and making comments about "being in heaven and referring to himself as God," the affidavit says.
The unnamed witness reported Cooper then eerily said, “Everything’s going to be okay,” and started drawing on a dry erase board while nude.
The victim, known to Cooper and Segura as “Uncle Tony,” was an elderly family friend that lived with them under Segura’s care.
Segura told detectives that her son had been discharged from the military earlier this year and suffers from delusion and mental health problems. She did not say what branch of the military he served in but did indicate that Cooper suffers from psychosis because of the combat action he saw.
Cooper was arrested and faces first-degree murder charges. He is being held without bail at the Downtown Denver Detention Center.
