Authorities have said that an Illinois sheriff's investigator was shot and killed while trying to break up an armed robbery that was happening outside of a family Christmas party. ABC News reported on Dec. 21, 2013, that the deputy fatally shot was a veteran officer that was actually off duty at the time of the incident.
50-year-old Cuauhtemoc (kwaw-TEH'-mok) Estrada died on Friday evening after the fatal shooting, per the Cook County Sheriff's Office in Illinois.
The shooting took place at the VFW hall in Bellwood, Illinois, which is a little over 10 miles from downtown Chicago.
At this time, very little details have been released on the incident, but it is known that the officer was trying to get in the middle of and stop a robbery outside of the VFW hall. That is when Estrada was fatally shot.
Both Bellwood police and the Cook County Sheriff's Office are investigating the situation and there has been no information as to whether a suspect is in custody or not.
Estrada is a former Marine that had been with the department for over 20 years. He was hosting a family party when he stepped outside around 7:30 p.m.
It was then that Estrada saw two people in ski masks and hoodies trying to rob his daughter and her boyfriend at gunpoint. Estrada reached for his gun and he was then shot in the chest.
