Estrada, a former Marine, was trying to protect his daughter and her boyfriend during an armed robbery. Reportedly, the sheriff went outside of a family Christmas party that was being held at the Bellwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall on Friday evening at approximately 7:30. When he was outside of the building, he saw his daughter and her boyfriend carrying food into the party, and they were being robbed by two persons wearing ski masks.

Estrada took his weapon out, attempting to intervene. That is when he was shot in the chest. He was quickly taken to Loyola University Medical Center in the neighboring town of Maywood. He was pronounced dead at 8:08 p.m.

According to family members, Estrada died while doing what he did best, which is watching out for family and his community.
