A deputy fatally shot is topping news searches this week, as a Cook County deputy sheriff from Bellwood, Illinois, was recently shot and killed while off duty. The man was gunned down defending one of his family members, a daughter, as well as his daughter’s boyfriend in the middle of a robbery while the two were being held at gunpoint. WebProNews provides the latest details on this fatal and senseless act of violence this Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.

The deputy fatally shot was Sheriff Cuauhtemoc Estrada, who has been said by friends and family to have been a solid police officer, a good father, and a dedicated former Marine. While the 50-year-old deputy was attending a Christmas party with his family at the local Bellwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall early Friday night, horror struck. After stepping out for a breath of fresh air around 7:30 p.m., he saw an act of intimidation and attempted theft threatening his daughter.

Close by the Veterans Hall, the deputy saw his daughter and her boyfriend being held at gunpoint in an attempted robbery. The two men were holding a gun to his loved ones and were wearing ski masks. According to the police report, both robbers were threatening the victims while they had been bringing food from their nearby car inside for the early Christmas party.

To save his child, the officer pulled out his own gun. However, the deputy was fatally shot immediately afterward while trying to intervene. The two men fled, and Sheriff Estrada was hurried to Loyola University Medical Center. However, he was tragically pronounced dead shortly after 8 p.m.

An investigation by the Cook County Police Department is ongoing to find and arrest the robbery and homicide suspects. Estrada’s family is said to be simply devastated at the fatal shooting. Both Estrada’s daughter and her boyfriend were not injured in the frightening incident.

At this time, officers are now following several leads, though no definitive details have been provided.

A tweet telling of the deputy fatally shot news was recently posted on Twitter:

"12/20/13 BELLWOOD - Off-duty Cook County Sheriff's Police Officer Cuauhtemoc Estrada killed while breaking up... http://fb.me/6j2EJ3lB4"

"The daughter who Estrada made the valiant effort to rescue, Christina Estrada, 19, was in deep despair and crying when talking with reporters, holding onto a necklace her father had bought her, and friends say she never took off – a pendant in the shape of a miniature gold Cook County Sheriff’s badge with her father’s badge number."

Christina cited her dad as a good man and father, up to the very end of defending her. “He was always there for us.”

“Now he’s not going to be able to see me walk across the stage when I graduate college.” said a distraught Christina. “It just seems so unreal.”
