A sheriff deputy fatally shot in Bellwood, Ill. Friday night happened during a Christmas party. Cuauhtemoc Estrada, 50, was killed while trying to stop an armed robbery outside a VFW hall. The news report revealed that Estrada was a former Marine who had worked with the department for over 20 years. He worked in the electronic monitoring unit.
An investigation is being conducted in the deputy being fatally shot by Bellwood police and the sheriff's office.
Estrada "died the same way he lives his life, which was protecting everyone he served," said Cook County sheriff's spokeswoman Cara Smith. She added that it is a "tragic loss to his family and to this department."
Estrada's family said he noticed two people in ski masks and hoodies attempting to rob his daughter and her boyfriend at gunpoint as they were unloading food from a car. When Estrada pulled out his gun to stop the robbers, the deputy was fatally shot in the chest. He later died at Loyola Univeristy Medical Center in Maywood.
Another report said a "procession of more than a dozen vehicles followed an ambulance with Estrada's body from the hospital to the county medical examiner's office."
Family, friends, and colleagues of Cuauhtemoc Estrada greatly miss him and have been holding vigils for the officer.
