A deputy was fatally shot while responding to an armed robbery in Illinois. On Dec. 21, ABC News reported that 50-year-old Cuauhtemoc Estrada was shot and killed outside of a family Christmas party on Friday night. The armed robbery occurred right outside of a VFW hall in Bellwood.
"Sheriff's officials released few details, except that the officer was shot when trying to intervene in the robbery outside the hall. They say Estrada is a former Marine who had been with the department for more than 20 years," reports ABC News.
The deputy who was fatally shot was believed to be by himself. It's unknown if he witnessed the crime while on patrol or if he was called to the scene -- but it does not sound like he was with a partner or another cop. At this time it's unknown if the suspect got away or if he was tracked down by other officers. A full investigation is currently underway.
The Sheriff's office did not say whether or not the robbery had anything to do with the Christmas party or someone who attended it.
