Deputies: Man drags, brutally beats woman with wood in front of their children

A 40-year-old man was arrested Monday after allegedly beating his ex-girlfriend in the head and face with a piece of wood while her two young children watch at their Springfield home.

And deputies said the assault happened the day he was released from jail for allegedly attacking the same woman in December.

They have charged Mr. Michael Patterson with attempted murder, according to the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, deputies responded to the Skyland Drive home. It’s unclear who called 911.

“Upon arrival they discovered the 45-year-old woman lying on the ground with visible injuries to her face," Sheriff Leroy Ravenell said.

Investigators said after Mr. Patterson was released from jail on Sunday he went straight to the victim's home to collect some personal belongings.

“The victim and Patterson argued,” Sheriff Ravenell said. “Patterson struck the victim in her face and dragged her to the yard where he continued to punch her.

“During the beating, he picked up a piece of wood from the front porch and continued beating the victim while two children watched.”

The two adults who brought Mr. Patterson to the victim's home drove him away before deputies arrived, he said.

"The assault this victim suffered, a second time by the hands of Patterson, is senseless,” Sheriff Ravenell said. “And for him to beat her so severely in front of two children shows what kind of man he really is."

The children have been placed in the care of a family member.
