Deputies in Thurston County, Wash., went out of their way to ensure that an escaped wolf hybrid, described as "aggressive," was not killed in their efforts to capture him, reported Friday's News Tribune.
On Friday, a German shepherd was attacked after the 140-pound wolf hybrid escaped from his kennel and scaled a six foot fence in Lacey, Wash.
Though responding deputies were prepared to shoot, if necessary, they hoped to avoid killing the canine and the wolf hybrid's owner was eventually able to lure the animal into a cage with the help of some raw meat for enticement.
The hybrid was not happy inside of the cage and was trying to break free from the enclosure. The owner, along with deputies, worked to reinforce the enclosure to keep the hybrid secure.
A Fish and Wildlife agent eventually arrived and was able to tranquilize the wolf in order to transport him back to his permanent enclosure.
According to the Olympian, the dog who was attacked "held his own" against the wolf hybrid, who is described as 98 percent wolf, and suffered only a superficial cut to the ear.
Though it is legal to own a wolf hybrid, the canine's owner will likely face a dangerous animal at large charge.
