Dept. of Homeland Security seeks to deport family over right to homeschool

On Tuesday, March 5, Human Events published an article about a German family who has for the past several years enjoyed the freedoms of American life. However, those freedoms are currently being threatened and the family is possibly facing deportation, as the Department of Homeland Security has essentially said they don’t deserve asylum in the United States. So what’s the big issue that is threatened their right to stay in America? Homeschooling their children.

Uwe and Hannelore Romeikie and their six children left Germany in 2008 and came to the United States seeking asylum for the freedom to educate their children at home, as homeschooling is banned in Germany. In fact, according to Michael Farris of the Home School Legal Defense Association, any form of alternative education in Germany is banned.

The Romeikie family endured much angst in an effort to educate their own children in Germany. Ultimately, the family had to pay thousands of dollars in fines and the children were taken from the home by police. According to Farris, if the Romeikie family is deported back to Germany, they will likely lose custody of their six children.

What happened to America being a refuge for those seeking a better life, a life with greater freedom and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?

Neither the Justice Department nor the Department of Homeland Security returned calls from Human Events seeking comment.
