There are many causes of depression in our country, but here are 3 of the major causes. If we can deal with these 3 causes then we have a better chance of healing from depression.

The 3 Major Causes of Depression:

  • We have lost our connection to Nature and all her healing properties. Most of our days and nights are spent inside and even when we are outside, we are not connecting. When we are outside we are preoccupied and not paying attention to the beautiful language of nature being spoken all around us. Find time to spend time outside. Really be aware of the sights, sounds, and smells. Walk with mindfulness. Pay attention to the language of the birds and other animals. Practice this for even 15 minutes a day and you will feel the difference
  • Our connection to Technology. Technology is both a blessing and a curse. While it can bring us unlimited information, it can also cause us much disconnect. It's not unusual to see whole families sitting at the dinner table with their faces in their phones. The technology is a two-edged sword. While it allows us to be connected in ways never possible before but it also causes us to be disconnected from those closest to us. We need to make the decision that we will step away from the technology and reconnect with life and those around you even if it is for an hour every day. Set our intention to become mindful when engaged with others and also spend time in mindful communication with ourselves. Meditate and practice awareness daily. Only 5-10 minutes of meditation is all it would take to connect with ourselves again and to bring us back into awareness.
  • Loss of Creativity. When was the last time you were really creative? There is more to being creative than just art and writing. Being creative is about rekindling your passions and freeing your mind. It's about tapping into your inner guidance and learning to play again. Tapping into that creative part of yourself is as easy as finding something you enjoy doing. Take a class, cook a great meal with lots of enthusiasm. Redecorate a room, paint a picture. Creativity is play, so learn to play again!

When we can reconnect to nature, others and our creativity, then we are on our way to dealing with depression. If your depression continues or worsens then always check with your doctor or counselor.
