Weight gain is very complicated and there are many factors that can lead to becoming obese. Weight gain or loss is dependent on a number of factors such as ----resting metabolic rate, food intake, amount of exercise, and the time of day different types of foods are consumed. Genetic factors also influence metabolism and help to explain why some people gain more weight than others. It’s no mystery that fried foods, large food portions, rich desserts, alcohol and soft drinks contribute to weight gain. Your body must burn off the calorie intake in physical activity to maintain a healthy weight.
Cause and effect
In a culture obsessed with being thin, many assume being overweight can be depressing. Some research has found a correlation to obesity and depression. They are both serious health concerns but the cause can originate with either one. Obesity leads to discrimination and that bias can result in depression.
Experts report that 75% of overeating is caused by emotions. When you feel sad or hopeless you tend to be inactive and exercise less while eating more! This can become a self-destructive cycle as food can only bring short-term comfort when under duress.
Chronic stress arousal also leads to a depressed affect that can lead to excessive weight gain. When people are feeling stressed healthy eating habits are difficult to maintain. You will find yourself eating to fill an emotional need or grabbing fast food because you are traveling to your next appointment.
Weight gain due to stress can also be due to the body’s hormonal system. Cortisol is a critical hormone that is released from the adrenal gland to regulate blood pressure and energy to the body. When this “stress hormone” is released during physical or psychological duress it can increase fat storage in the abdominal area.
Healthy lifestyle
Depression tends to be an outcome of being stressed and not living a healthy lifestyle. Maintaining your self-care of adequate sleep, regular exercise and a healthy diet is a daily regime. You should consult with your physician or a physical trainer to determine the best plan for you to obtain the appropriate weight for your height and frame. Then work every day to become the person you envision.
