Depression and $2.75 buys you a small cup of coffee

Of all the things in life, depression is about the most useless, unnecessary, and wasteful habit you can get into. And make no mistake about this - it is a habit. More often than not, it turns into an addiction. It goes from you being in control into controlling you.

Most people don't start off with the intent of becoming depressed, and eventually addicted to not only the bad habit, but the added bad habit/addiction of anti-depressants. No more than we start out with the intent of destroying our lungs and health by smoking. But lo and behold - you're part of the massive sub-culture of addicted human beings.

America, by-in-large, suffers from more widespread addictions than any of the industrialized nations. Depression, drugs (legal or otherwise), alcohol, smoking, gambling, overwork, obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, and an overall low-grade mentality of needing a quick fix for all problems and conflicts.

We also adhere to a false set of human values, along with being emotional cripples, placing us further into the hands of the doctors and pill pushers who infest our land with their lies, deceptions, and fraud.

It's all a cockamamie state of ignorance and indulgence in patterns of behavior and thinking that leaves us looking and behaving as if we were mindless and incapable of growth and enlightenment. In truth, we have reached a point as a nation where we are powerless to move against our addictions. We refuse to even consider change.

What we are left with is a decaying society that has yet to realize any of the lessons that history tells. We're still dumb enough to believe we can ride out the storm by standing pat and doing nothing. That's why we treat our addictions as the norm; they have, in fact, become the norm in American society.

Are you part of this national mentality? Are you addicted to one or more of our portfolio of bad habits? Are you unwilling to change? Remember the words: "Finally, there is no refuge from ourselves."

By the way, that cup of coffee may also be a very bad habit. Just another poor way of dealing with the stress and anxiety. Another American tradition that has worn its way into the fabric of human weakness.

Being one that has suffered from depression for years, had anxiety attacks that has sent me to the hospital, you have lost all credentials with me. You should probably do more research before you start writing stuff like this.

oh yeah and take your phone number off your name that is a lil too much don't you think!

Your childlike comments reflect the true nature of your problem. As for doing research, I've done it for more than 50 years - and the results have been the same, whether it was in private practice, working in psychiatric wards, hospitals, prisons, with veterans - you name it.
What you suffer from is the inability to relate to human problems as human problems, the way most of the people in most parts of the world do. Instead, you hang on to your misery as if it were a badge of honor.
Grow up! That's the starting point. While you're at it, figure out who you're really angry at, including yourself.
    Best of luck ....
