Update 9/1/14: Shirley is now in a foster home and there is hope that she will soon be adopted!

On June 24, a 12-year-old boxer mix dubbed "Shirley" arrived to an animal shelter in Long Island, N.Y.

Shirley came to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter as a stray and in the months that followed, nobody walked in to claim her as their own.

Alone at the facility, the elderly dog, with the too-thin body, revealed her sadness. The stress of being without a home resulted in weight loss and stomach issues - those who witnessed Shirley's decline feel that her depression led to the physical issues.

Since the initial issues were noted, she began to receive small, frequent meals which aided her digestion greatly.

On Tuesday, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter director wrote the following words about Shirley:

Shirley is wonderful. So vibrant and sweet. She is quite an active girl when she wants to be but usually likes curling up on the couch. She has been doing well with her GI issues and hasn't been vomiting. She is being fed small frequent meals and seems to be good with that! She is still looking for her forever home!

Shirley has been waiting for weeks to join a family where she can receive one-on-one attention and share her unconditional love. Please take a moment to network this senior dog's information:
