Depp's Dead Man comes to Bluray

Unlike most actors Johnny Depp has never really been what you would call a normal A-List actor. With the exception of his Pirates franchise and numerous outings with director Tim Burton he is better known for his long list of unique and strange little artsy films.

One of his lesser known films that came out in 1995, a western called Dead Man. This film is vintage Johnny Depp. Directed by Jim Jarmusch director of the cult favorite Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, this film was loved by most critics but just not seen by that many people. The film follows a man believed by an Indian to be the reincarnation of poet William Blake, whom he saved after being shot. While on the trail with the Indian called Nobody, he is hunted by numerous bounty hunters and lawmen. This film is visually stunning, shot completely in black and white and resembles a western of that era. It’s not like any western you will ever see, being somewhat modern while maintaining the western feel. Depp gives one of his best performances to date here using his quirky yet likeable mannerisms to bring this character to life. His relationship with Nobody, portrayed by Gary Farmer really works which was vital to make this movie work. The movie itself is a bit slow, but necessary as it is about this journey as opposed to just western action. As the story moves forward there is a bit more action thrown in, complete with an unexpected somewhat gory scene.

In addition to Depp’s star power leading the pack, this movie host a variety of cameos and co-stars including Lance Henrikson, Michael Wincott, John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Crispin Glover, Billy Bob Thornton, Gabriel Byrne, Alfred Molina, and Robert Mitchum in one of his final film roles. With the exception of Henrickson, who plays a great bounty hunter bad guy here, most of these great actors appeared very briefly in the film, but all added something unique.

If you have never seen this film and love westerns or Depp, then this is a must see. Recently, Echo Bridge Entertainment has released it on BluRay, and the hi-def transfer really enhances the black and white shot look of the film.
