What do you get when you combine Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg, guns, cash and a Mexican drug cartel? The answer: A funny, combustible, action packed thriller with great acting and a compelling plot. If the movie is half as enjoyable as the Red Band trailer then it should do fairly well at the box office. It’s interesting that this film has apparently flown under the radar with such notable stars as its leads.
The caper pic is based on the 2008 BOOM! Studios graphic novels written by Steven Grant and illustrated by Mateus Santolouco. The story is about a DEA agent and a naval intelligence officer who find themselves on the run after an attempt to infiltrate a drug cartel to steal $3 million in cash goes wrong. While fleeing, Washington (Bobby Trench) and Wahlberg (Stig Stigman) are surprised to learn that the reason for their fractious, shaky alliance is that they're both undercover agents. Scott Foundas of Variety claims that the actors make for a very enjoyable pair of double-crossed undercover operatives.
According to Cinemablend.com, Wahlberg appeared to promote the film on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon last night. This movie looks to be a great fit for an actor who thrives in this type of role. Also starring are Edward James Olmos, James Marsden, Bill Paxton, Fred Ward and Paula Patton.
Icelandic director Baltasar Kormakur, who worked with Wahlberg on “Contraband” (2012) helmed a script penned by TV-writer Blake Masters. The film was produced by Ross Richie, Andrew Cosby, Adam Siegel, Norton Herrick, Marc Platt, and Randall Emmett and George Furla of Emmett/Furla Films. It was independently financed by Mark Damon’s Foresight Unlimited and will be distributed by Universal Pictures.
The movie will open in theaters this Friday, August 2nd.
