For the past twelve years, hundreds of local and touring indie acts have descended upon Denver’s historic Baker district for several days in July to participate in the annual Denver Post Underground Music Showcase. Momentum has built each year, making it now Denver’s premiere summer indie music festival. The thirteenth annual UMS is slated to take place just weeks from now, July18-21, 2013.
Over 350 bands. Nearly two dozen venues. Plus informative lectures (aka “The SESH”), an art exhibit, a freshly announced partnership with Music Hack Day, and other surprises! All this for the cost of a four-day wristband which costs less than the ticket price for most one-off shows ($35 when you purchase in advance).
At the local level, the UMS feels much like summer camp for the Denver music scene, with hundreds of noted local acts slated to perform each year, along with multiple collaborations between band members. (It’s not unusual to see local musicians sitting in with one band at one performance, only to race to another venue to perform with another band the next hour.) This year’s local lineup for the UMS includes mainstays like The Epilogues, Chimney Choir, Flashbulb Fires, Hindershot, John Common & Blinding Flashes of Light, Ian Cooke, Monroe Monroe, Katey Laurel, Petals of Spain, Rob Drabkin, Take To the Oars and many others. UMS regulars will also find some new names on this year’s lineup, including up-and-comers like Ark Life, Hollow Talk and Brave Song Circle, as well as the return of some familiar names like Born in the Flood and Elin Palmer.
The list of headlining acts for this year’s UMS is impressive in its own right. In particular, watch for shows from Mudhoney, Cults, Bleached, Baywood, The Fresh & Onlys, Lord Huron, Hockey, Small Black and Born in the Flood.
The Underground Music Showcase 2013 is expecting its largest turnout ever, so it’s best to buy your wristband early in case of a sell-out (which is becoming more likely by the day). Advance wristbands are $35, and any remaining wristbands cost $50 beginning the first day of the event. VIP wristbands are also available. (Go here to purchase.) Mark your calendars to come be part of Denver’s biggest music celebration! For all the latest details, visit the UMS website.
