Denver's newest charity gaming convention, MAGNAcon, starts January 15, 2010

Play games and do good is the tag line for MAGNAcon, Denver’s newest charity gaming convention. Friday, January, 15 through 17, 2010 marks the first year of MAGNAcon. The convention features three days of board games, and an open gaming with a provided library all for a $15 weekend pass during pre-registration or $20 at the door. The event takes place at Whittier Community Center, 2900 Downing Street, Denver CO 80205.

Gaming for a Cause

100% of the proceed for the 2010 convention will go to Whittier Community Center and Food Bank of the Rockies. Located in the historic Whittier neighborhood, the community center strives to provide north Denver with a safe place to gather for kid’s activities, movies, gaming and classes. The Food Bank of the Rockies services Colorado and Wyoming providing food to families in need. Convention goers are asked to bring non-perishable items to donate to the Food Bank.

MAGNAcon takes suggestions for future charities. The charity must be based in Denver. It is preferred the charity serves the inner city and can be tied into the gaming hobby in some way. For example Whittier Community Center will hosting a monthly community gaming night as a result of the improvements that will be made with the funds raised from this convention.

Convention Features

In its first year, MAGNAcon not only offers board games. The Game with the Designer series allows players to sit with designers, while playing their games. This year’s Designer series guests are award winning game creators Keith Meyers and Nate Hayden. Keith Meyers is responsible for such games as The Hobbit and 2nd Guess. Nate Hayden is the creator of San Quentin Kings and plans to premier an expansion at MAGNAcon.

For Lord of the Rings fans, MAGNAcon features Helm’s Deep, a game corner dedicated to Lord of the Rings board games. Games will be available Friday and Saturday. Players can try The Hobbit, The Confrontation and War of the Rings among others.

MAGNAcon plans to expand in future years with RPGs, miniatures and card games. The convention may move to a warmer month for 2011.

A Girl Gamer with a Cause

Veronica Livingston along with her husband Scot began planning MAGNAcon together in August 2009. What started as a way to meet other gamers, became a plan for a charity convention that hopes to grow in the coming years. Mrs. Livingston fell in love with Eurogames three years ago and began collecting them in earnest with her collection now bursting at 300 games. She currently demos Z-man Games as a Denver demo representative. Mrs. Livingston believes that everyone should do what they love be it gaming or knitting, be the person man or woman. MAGNAcon is a way for her to do what she loves and do good as well.

Board Games and Fun

So take the family for a fun weekend and join MAGNAcon for a game or two. Board games are a great form of entertainment everyone can enjoy.
