Denver’s big chill begins to ease but temperatures remain well below normal

Following a day in which temperatures failed to climb above zero and set a record in the process, the Mile High City warms up slightly on Thursday. Temperatures however will remain more than 30 degrees below normal for the date.

Some early morning light snow and flurries will be possible in the Denver metro area early. However, little, if any at all, accumulation is expected. Any activity will come to an end by mid-morning or so.

Mostly cloudy skies will be above throughout the day today. Temperatures will be warming up to the mid-teens in town. Single digits will still be seen at lower elevations on the eastern plains.

A Wind Chill Advisory remains in effect until 11:00 a.m. for all of Colorado's lower elevations including the Front Range and Denver. Anyone venturing outdoors this morning should exercise caution and limit their exposure.

Mountain locations will actually be warmer than Denver today with temperatures in the upper teens and approaching 20 degrees. A weak storm system will be arriving in the high country later today that will bring light snow accumulations from this afternoon into tonight.

Looking ahead, much warmer temperatures await the Denver on Friday and Saturday. Strong downslope flow will bring warming winds that will scour the cold air out and help to melt the snow on the ground.

Friday and Saturday’s high temperatures will be in the low to mid-40s with a good bit of sun. Winds will be breezy in some locations however, somewhat of a catch 22 as it is the winds that will help warm things up.

A cold front may impact the area Sunday and Monday and bring a return of some snow. Temperatures however won’t be nearly as cold as what we have been experiencing.
