Another year has now entered the history books. Looking inside the weather data for 2013, we see that Denver saw its usual widely varying conditions.

Out at Denver International Airport where the Mile High City’s official records are kept, the average temperature for the year came in at 50.1 degrees. By comparison, Denver’s 1981 to 2010 annual average temperature is 50.4 degrees.

Looking at warm temperatures DIA recorded 54 days of temperatures at or above 90 degrees. This was quite a bit more than the average of 40 days we see.

Two days saw Denver reach 100 degrees, the hottest readings of the year. These were recorded on June 11th and July 11th.

At the opposite end of the thermometer, 169 days saw low temperatures at or below 32 degrees. On average we expect to see 157 days below freezing.

The coldest temperature of the year was a record-setter and came just last month. It was on December 5th that the mercury plummeted to -15 degrees.

Precipitation for 2013 came in well above normal thanks largely in part to the extraordinary amount of rain received in September.

Denver, as always drier than many other locations due to the station being at DIA, saw 17.60 inches. On average we see 14.92 inches.

Above and by far the wettest month of the year was September and was responsible for the above average precipitation numbers. 5.61 inches fell into Denver’s rain bucket that month alone.

Snowfall during the calendar year ended up relatively strong thanks to healthy totals from February through April. For 2013 Denver saw 74.1 inches of snow. Overall the rest of the months of the year saw below normal snowfall.

Denver’s 2013 / 2014 season however has started out dismally with only 8.1 inches so far in the Mile High City. This is well below the long term average that would have us see 21.2 inches by the end of the year.
