The Queen City of the Plains has a big weekend coming up. Here are my recommendations for some of the best shows this weekend.
Thursday, February 9
- Lamont Symphony Orchestra (LSO), 7:30 PM at The Newman Center - Free w/ ticket aquired in person at the box office. Gates Hall will fill to capacity for this event. The LSO is playing Mussorgsky's "Pictures at an Exhibition" as orchestrated by Ravel. You may think you have never heard Mussorgsky before but I would wager you have. The excitement of nearly 100 of the state's best collegiate musicians performing live will get your blood pumping. Modern etiquette conventions lean toward applauding an entire orchestral work at the end of its last movement but you can do what you want to as far as I am concerned.
Friday, February 10
- Bop Skizzum's 1st Annual Nerd Prom at the Gothic Theater, doors at 7 PM, $10/$13. The buzz about this show has been building a lot in recent weeks, especially with the Skizzum's Nerd Prom photo contest on Facebook that ends Thursday. Supporting groups Broken Tongues, Della, and Wheelchair Sports Camp will be bringing tons of their own talent to Nerd Prom as well. I'll be reviewing this show for Listen Up Denver, my review of Bop Skizzum's show in Fort Collins two weeks ago is here.
Saturday, February 11
- Roster McCabe with The Ragbirds at Cervante's Other Side, doors at 8 PM, $10 plus $2 service charge. After hearing these touring groups online I decided it was worth making an exception to my local-focus to give them a recommendation. Roster McCabe's "funky reggae dance rock" will be well supported by The Ragbirds global jam grooviness. (Ragbirds travel in a van that runs on recycled vegetable oil, maybe consider taking the D line to Cervante's)
Sunday, February 12
- The Blues Allstars Open Jam at Ziggies, 7 PM, Free. The Blues Allstars invite you to bring an ax if you've got one to grind because Carla's bar is a great place to play some music and unwind. My article about Colorado's oldest blues bar is recommended below. The $1 PBR's and songs about broke-down love will be sure to get you through the long winter night in high spirits.
Give your favorite local band a shout-out below and be sure to say hello if we cross paths at a show.
