The summer of 2012 is turning out to be a busy one for Colorado filmmakers, with several projects just completed, in the works, or scheduled to start filming this summer.
Award-winning writer/ director Sean J.S. Jourdan just wrapped principle photography on his debut feature film Teddy Boy, a psychological thriller about a rising tennis star and his weekend with a middle-aged couple whose marriage is disintegrating. The filming took place in the Denver area and on and around Lake Granby in late May and early June. Boulder-based producer Meryem Ersoz (Mind's Eye) helped bring the film to life, and much of the funding was accomplished through a successful Kickstarter campaign this spring.
Haylar Garcia and Jim Brennan have shared some news about their horror film currently shooting in and around Denver. Red Harvest is a film about teens on the run from Amish vampires.
Denver actor/ producer Jimmy Drain is excited to get started on his Mixed Martial Arts feature film, Extreme Tag, which will combine a compelling drama with underground street fighting action. The film will star Drain and LA actress Kerry Knuppe (Skills Like This, Cinemax's Femme Fatales), and is scheduled to film July 14 - 22, with Thomas Lee Howell and Bret Baker directing. According to Drain, Extreme Tag is the first independent MMA/Street Fighter style feature produced out of Colorado. They are currently casting a few roles, including the main MMA antagonist, so anyone with some fighting experience and acting ability can contact Drain for details about auditioning. A fundraising event is planned for July 11th at the Oriental Theatre at 8pm. The Black Sun Film Explosion will feature live performances, films, and opportunities to be cast in the film.
Denver filmmaker Darla Rae recently headed to Georgia to shoot footage of the Mike Glenn basketball camps for deaf and hard of hearing youth for her upcoming film Spirit of Love. Rae is taking an all-out approach to funding for this film, using everything from bake sales, to an indiegogo campaign, to product placement and sponsorships for businesses. Aspiring teen filmmakers are taking an active role in all aspects of this film production, learning on the job from the award-winning filmmakers who are helming the production. Principle photography on Spirit of Love will begin in August.
Best of luck to all these homegrown productions!
