Denver Dining 101: Where is the best Mexican food in the Highlands?

Looking to take advantage of the culinary creations the Hispanic population has brought to Northwest Denver? There are numerous Mexican restaurants around town, with several of the most authentic ones right here in the Highlands neighborhood. Here are five in no particular order.

Taqueria Patzcuaro

Taqueria Patzcuaro  Zagat award for excellence in 2007 and they keep packing them in. Known for great green chili and guacamole, it’s hard to have a mis-step here with the menu. Margaritas are mixed well with a nice selection of Mexican beers. Futbol (that’s soccer to you Americans) on the big screen, free chips and salsa and servers that bend over backwards- after all they own the joint. $

La Loma   A long time neighborhood establishment with several seating rooms and a nice outdoor patio. There is a lot more atmosphere here than in most other Mexican restaurants, so it’s suitable for business meals. Known for their wonderful green chili, homemade tortillas and chips. Plenty of great choices on the extensive menu including some offbeat items (Carne Guisada) and 20 oz. margaritas for the strong willed. $$

Hilario's Mexican Restaurant, Denver, CO.

Hilario's Mexican Restaurant   Exhaustive menu, 3 sizes of margaritas, big outdoor patio, everything here is super-sized. The food always comes out quickly, the wait staff is extremely friendly and conscientious and more Spanish is spoken than English-always a good clue. There is nothing over the top about this place. It has simple décor, mainstream offerings but a place you could bring 2 or 20 people. $
4835 W. 38th Street (at Xavier), Denver, CO.            303-480-5435

Aztec Sol   Smaller restaurant which serves good food, Mexican beers and a lot of tequila. There are dozens of tequila choices here and a nice outdoor seating area facing 32nd. Next door is a great tamale place run by the same owners. Pretty basic interior but service is prompt and servers keep the drinks flowing. $-$$

Rosa Linda's Mexican Cafe, Denver, CO.

Rosa Linda’s Mexican Café   Family owned and operated joint that serves lard-free beans and whole wheat tortillas. They even list calorie counts on certain items they deem healthier. Most dishes are spicy and there are some interesting menu items (cactus). The service here is sometimes spotty. $-$$

Hilario's was a lunch favorite for years when I worked closer to it. The sirloin enchilada plate is fantastic!

Los Carboncitos on 38th/Pecos is the best Mex I've had in the Highlands. Fresh tortillas made in house, four kinds of salsa, great huaraches and tacos, and friendly staff.

Dont forget El Camino Tavern at W 32nd and Meade st. That place has awesome food and drink specials.
